Jennifer Hudson Family Slayings Update

With two crime scenes, a suspect in custody and an outraged community, Chicago’s top cop said he is confident investigators will find clues to solve the deaths of Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew.

“I suspect we’ll have some evidence that will link us to the killer,” said Police Superintendent Jody Weis, adding that surveillance cameras throughout the city may have captured images that would help the investigation.

Hudson was among seven family members and close friends who cried and held hands as they identified 7-year-old Julian King’s body from a live image on a television screen at the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office Monday afternoon.

The boy was found dead earlier Monday in the back of an SUV, ending a frantic search that began after the shooting deaths of Hudson’s mother and brother three days earlier.

Chicago police spokeswoman Monique Bond said the child also had been shot. The medical examiner’s office planned an autopsy on Tuesday.

Weis said a motive remained unclear. Police have characterized the slayings as “domestic related” and authorities have been questioning Julian’s stepfather, who has been estranged from the boy’s mother and is being held on a parole violation. No one has been charged in the slayings.

“It wasn’t a case of a stranger-type homicide,” Weis said.

Julian’s body was found early Monday in the rear seat of the SUV, which was parked on the street in a neighborhood of brownstone homes and apartment buildings about 10 miles from his home. The SUV had been the subject of an Amber Alert issued Friday after Hudson’s mother and brother were found slain.

The Amber Alert had listed William Balfour, the estranged husband of Julia Hudson, Jennifer’s sister, as a suspect in a “double homicide investigation.” He is not the boy’s father.

Balfour, 27, was taken into custody for questioning Friday after the bodies of Hudson’s 57-year-old mother, Darnell Donerson, and 29-year-old brother, Jason Hudson, were found.

Weis said Monday that Balfour, 27, “remains a person of interest.”

On Sunday, Balfour was transferred to the Illinois Department of Corrections, where a spokeswoman on Monday declined to discuss his parole violation.

Corrections records show that Balfour spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle. He was expected to remain in state custody until the Illinois Prisoner Review Board looked at his case.

Balfour’s mother, Michele Balfour, has said Hudson’s mother kicked Balfour out of the family home last winter. She denied her son had anything to do with the killings.

It was unclear whether Balfour had an attorney.

Lynette Louden, 47, said she called police about the SUV across the street from her home on Chicago’s West Side after her family’s Chihuahua started barking at it early Monday. Some neighbors said they hadn’t seen the vehicle before Monday, but Louden said it had been there since at least Saturday.

“I only hoped the body wasn’t in there,” she said. “When they said that it was, I cried.”

Weis said police were waiting for the autopsy to determine how long the boy had been dead but estimated the vehicle was parked on the street “a couple of days.”

When asked how officers could have missed the SUV during their massive search, Weis noted that Chicago is a big city and that the vehicle was “several miles away from the first crime scene.”

Steve Peterson, head of the department’s Bureau of Investigative Services, said the search for the boy had been centered farther east based on information they had about where Balfour’s current girlfriend lives.

Hudson, 27, who started out on “American Idol” and won an Academy Award for best supporting actress in 2007 for her role in “Dreamgirls,” returned to Chicago to be with her family during the weekend. She also had identified the bodies of her mother and brother.

At a candlelight vigil Monday night, hundreds of people gathered outside the Englewood home where the two bodies were found. They sang, held hands and cried in the cold as they contributed to an expanding memorial of stuffed animals, balloons and flowers.

Many said they could not understand how someone could shoot a little boy.

“It pains all of us to know three lives are gone and we don’t know why,” said Doris Jones, who lives in the neighborhood.

Halle Berry Named Sexiest Woman Alive

Esquire has good taste, and we here at SCB wholeheartedly agree with their choice.

Alongside a photo spread that shows her in little more than a T-shirt, Halle Berry talks about being the sexiest woman alive, a title Esquire magazine gives her in its November issue.

“I don’t know exactly what it means, but being 42 and having just had a baby, I think I’ll take it,” says Berry, who gave birth to her daughter, Nahla, in March.

“Sexiness is a state of mind — a comfortable state of being,” she says. “It’s about loving yourself in your most unlovable moments.”

But Berry, who won an Oscar for her role in “Monster’s Ball,” can’t claim the sexiest-woman honor all to herself.

“I share this title with every woman, because every woman is a nominee for it at any moment,” she says.

Miley Cryus Celebrates Sweet 16

Miley Cyrus’ 16th birthday party was more boisterous than sweet. Cyrus celebrated the hallmark birthday at an over-the-top Disneyland celebration Sunday — even though she doesn’t actually turn 16 until Nov. 23. The theme park was closed for the super-sized soiree, which included a four-song performance by the teen queen and a fireworks display above Sleeping Beauty Castle and 16 giant inflatable candles.

“Miley is really hard to surprise,” her father Billy Ray Cyrus said at the event.

Organizers estimated over 5,000 people attended the special party, which cost $250 a ticket. On the event’s purple carpet — that’s Cyrus’ favorite color — the “Hannah Montana” star bragged that her parents bought her a new puppy for her birthday. What else does Cyrus want for her birthday? A new car? Perhaps a later curfew?

“My parents shut down Disneyland for me, so I’m good for a while,” Cyrus said.

Cyrus’ father opened up for his daughter with a few of his own songs, including “Achy Breaky Heart.” His daughter donned a white ruffled skirt and jersey-like vest with “Sweet 16″ printed on the back for her truncated concert. At one point, Cyrus boarded a boat in the park’s Rivers of America and crooned such tunes as “Breakout” and “G.N.O.”

Throughout the evening, several popular attractions, such as Big Thunder Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean, remained open to partygoers. Additional activities, like receiving a “Hannah Montana” makeover and playing the upcoming Disney Interactive Studios rhythm video game “Ultimate Band,” were also made available to attendees.

Partygoers ogled celebrities roaming around the park throughout the party. David Archuleta and his entourage skipped the line to ride Space Mountain. Jennie Garth and her family ducked out before the fireworks display capping the celebration. Other stars in attendance included Steve Carell, Cindy Crawford, Tyra Banks and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Disney used the event to promote their upcoming “What Will You Celebrate?” marketing initiative, which encourages tourists to take “celebration vacations” with their families. Beginning in 2009, guests at Disneyland and Walt Disney World in Florida can gain free theme park admission on their birthday with a valid ID and proof of birth date.

Over at Disney’s California Adventure, Disneyland’s sister theme park, an entirely different celebration was occurring during the Sweet 16 event: the 11th annual Gay Days Anaheim, an unofficial gathering of gays and lesbians at the Disneyland Resort. Event producer Jeffrey Epstein said Cyrus’ affair didn’t conflict with Gay Days Anaheim.

“We’re happy to share our big weekend with Miley,” said Epstein. “While it may be a small world after all, we think it’s big enough for both groups to have a blast.”

… just two more years…. two more years….. but if she follows in Britney’s footsteps she’ll be pregnant way before she is legal.

Howard Stern’s Star Filled Wedding

Howard Stern Wedding Photos

The wedding of Howard Stern and model Beth Ostrosky at Le Cirque restaurant in New York turned out to be a star studded event with a host of stars including John Stamos, Donald Trump and Barbara Walters.

Access Reports:

Dressed in a grey suit and on the arm of a pretty brunette, Stamos turned up grinning as he headed into the ceremony. Though they split earlier this summer, former couple Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman walked in together.

Apparently Howard and his bride Beth, in an nontraditional move characteristic of Stern’s attitude towards life, arrived in a black limo together.

The bride wore a white gown designed by Georgina Chapman with a white shawl-like wrap to stave off the New York City cold.

Other stars attending the ceremony included “Live’s” Kelly Ripa, whose husband Mark Consuelos was ordained as a minister specifically to marry Howard and Beth.

Barbara Walters, Billy Joel and his wife Katie Lee Joel, Joan and Melissa Rivers, Artie Lang, Steve Schirippa, and Denise Rich also were spotted attending the event.

Neal E. Boyd Wins America’s Got Talent

Neal E. Boyd, a 32-year-old insurance-salesman-turned-opera-singer from Sikeston, MO, was revealed to be America’s Got Talent’s third-season champion during last night’s live finale broadcast of the NBC reality talent competition.

“I love you Mom — I know you’re at home watching — I love you so much!” a tearful Boyd shouted after America’s Got Talent host Jerry Springer’s announcement that home viewers had voted him the show’s third-season winner.

“What has happened to my life… thank you America!” he added.

As America’s Got Talent 3’s winner, Boyd — who narrowly edged Eli Mattson, a 26-year-old pianist and singer from Chicago, IL, by a vote margin of less that 0.5%, according to Springer — received a $1,000,000 prize, the show’s “Best New Act In America” title,” and the opportunity to headline a special October 17 Las Vegas show that will also feature second-season winner Terry Fator and several other third-season acts.

However unfortunately for Boyd, unlike most reality show winners (but just like Fator), he won’t actually be receiving his full cash prize anytime soon.

Instead, Boyd’s $1,000,000 prize will be paid over via a lottery prize-like 40-year period. Boyd can (and probably will) opt to pass on the $25,0000 annual payments and instead receive a lump sum, however should he do so, the present cash value of the prize will be no more than several hundred thousand dollars.

His First Performance:

After revealing Boyd’s victory, Jerry also revealed that Boyd would also be receiving one more “surprise” — a congratulatory video message from opera singer Placido Domingo.

“By taking part in America’s Got Talent, you have brought [opera] to America’s ears. So be proud of it, and I’m sure from today on you are starting a brilliant career. All of my best and congratulations,” the legendary opera singer said.

Earlier in the show Boyd had also received a video message of support from Il Divo, whose song “Mama” he had performed in an earlier round.

America’s Got Talent’s one-hour live finale began with five finalists — Boyd; Mattson; Nuttin’ But Strings, a hip-hop violin duo comprised of 21-year-old Damien Escobar and his 23-year-old brother Tourie Escobar from Jamaica Queens, NY; Donald Braswell, a singer from San Antonio, TX; and Queen Emily, a 40-year-old soul singer from Stockton, CA — still in the running to be crowned the show’s third-season winner.

After filling the first half of the broadcast with performances from the season’s Top 10 finalists, British pop-singer Leona Lewis, and the “America’s Got Talent Audition All-Stars” (a collection of rejected audtioneers), Jerry revealed that, based on the results of the home viewer voting that followed last week’s Final 5 performance show, Queen Emily would be the first finalist eliminated from the competition.

While disappointed, Queen Emily took the news rather well and was thankful to those who supporter her.

“I would just like to thank America for supporting me, and everybody that voted for me. You’re the greatest,” she told the audience.

“You’ve given us weeks and months of great entertainment. Good luck to you. You’ve got a great future,” Jerry told her before giving her a kiss on the forehead.

Jerry didn’t waste much time before next revealing that Donald Braswell would be the next finalist eliminated from the competition.

Acknowledging that Braswell was the “wild card” act that the fans had voted to bring back into the competition, Jerry told Donald that he had likely been through “the wildest route to the Final 4.”

“I just want to say to everyone out there that has followed me through this, as well as the judges who gave me that second chance to be put in front of America. God bless you. Thank you so much. You’ve given me and my family such an incredible gift,” an appreciative Donald said to the crowd in between blowing kisses.

Jerry then revealed — to a shocked crowed and judges — that Nuttin’ But Stringz would be eliminated from the competition, leaving Boyd and Mattson as season 3’s finalists.

“Well we taught America that when you dream big, dreams come true. We didn’t even think we would get this far,” Damien said. “We made violin cool, and we brought a new culture of music to America.”

“Nuttin’ But Stringz, it defines passion, it defines heart, we are epidemic. When you get it, you’re gonna have it,” added a more emotional Tourie.

Mattson took the news of his loss well and congratulated and embraced Boyd immediately after his victory was announced.

“You were phenomenonal, ladies and gentlemen let’s have a hand for Eli Mattson,” Springer said as he shook hands with the runner-up before he exited the stage.

Heath Ledger’s Estate Settled

This was definitely a thoughtful gesture on behalf of Heath Ledger’s family.

Matilda Rose Ledger will inherit her father Heath’s fortune following the actor’s untimely death, Australia newspaper the Sunday Times reported.

The fate of “The Dark Knight” star’s fortune has been up in the air since his death in January, which left behind his former partner, Michelle Williams, and their daughter, Matilda Rose – and a will that left his assets instead to the late actor’s parents and three sisters, Kate and Olivia Ledger and Ashleigh Bell. The will was reportedly prepared before Matilda’s birth. Now, the Ledgers have agreed on the fate of the money.

“Our family has gifted everything to Matilda,” Heath’s father, Kim Ledger, told the Sunday Times on Saturday. “There is no claim.”

The Ledger estate has reportedly been estimated at sums up to $20 million, though his will reportedly lists only $145,000 in assets and cash.

Heath died of an overdose of prescription drugs in his New York apartment on Jan. 22. His critically acclaimed performance as the Joker in summer box office hit “The Dark Knight” has earned him early Oscar buzz.
