Jordin Sparks and her Promise
Promise rings have always cracked me up, even back when I was in college. It’s basically like a big sign that guys see and go.. “Whoa, well ok. NEXT!” Or some see it as a challenge, once conquered, to be cast aside for the next one. My favorite are the girls who dress and act like they work in a whore house but walk around with a promise ring and a cross necklace. Can you say “confused”?
At any rate, I thought Brand’s comments at the VMA were spot on, and the fact that little Miss Pure (and I say that tongue in cheek) needed to chastize him more than amused me. I think that most women hold on to the wives tale about women not hitting their sexual peak until 30, so they figure they can wait. While it is true that it usually takes that long for women to overcome their sexual inhibitions, their body has been decaying for the last 5-8 years, just like the rest of us. SO, you may be mentally at your peak, but your physical peak is long behind. Trust me, I have a PhD in Genetics after all!
But I digress…..
American Idol champion Jordin Sparks says she doesn’t regret her voicing her objection to comedian Russell Brand’s anti-purity ring comments during Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, however she does wish she had delivered her message a little better.
“It’s something I feel strongly about,” Sparks told Entertainment Weekly about her commitment to remain chaste.Brand, who served as the awards show’s host, had repeatedly skewered The Jonas Brothers’ purity rings — which each band member wears to symbolize their vows to abstain from premarital sex — during Sunday’s telecast.
Sparks — who wears a promise ring herself — didn’t agree with the comments, and she decided to publicly stick up for her position when she came out on stage to present an award with singer John Legend.
“I just have one thing to say about promise rings — it’s not bad to wear a promise ring because not everybody, guy or girl, wants to be a slut,” Sparks told the audience.
However after thinking about the issue some more, Sparks now says that while she doesn’t regret speaking her mind, she probably could have expressed herself better.
“I wish I would’ve worded it differently - that somebody who doesn’t wear a promise ring isnâ€TMt necessarily a slut - but I canâ€TMt take it back now,” she told EW. “It was a split-second thing, and it came out kind of wrong. Still, I donâ€TMt regret it.”
She added that The Jonas Brothers had complimented her soon after she had made her comments.
The “No Air” singer also insisted that she had “nothing against” the controversial Brand, and said that the two had even shared a laugh about the situation after the show.
